A Tradition of Excellence, 5 Years Running

The Bomber Cross Country team was the 4-time defending State Champion going into our senior year. (It's worth noting that no team had ever before won twice in a row.) Despite past dominance, the Bombers weren't favored to win another state title, having lost badly at the early-season Edmonds Invite against mostly Seattle-area teams. The Spokesman-Review, however, recognized that the Bombers weren't to be trifled with: The paper's pre-State headline read, "Don't Overlook the Bombers."

Guy Tunnell Jim Rice At Seattle's Evergreen High School, the Bomber runners -- led by senior captains Guy Tunnell (at left) and Jim Rice (right) and including seniors Kirk Higginson (below left), Keith Jolley (below right), and Rick Swallow (below center), along with Duane Ostler and John Zorich -- took home their 5th straight State Championship.

In Cross Country, as in any high school sport, the coach deserves much of the credit. In this case, kudos belong to both Coach Mike Hepper, who took over the team our junior year and managed to win two State titles, and his predecessor Max Jensen. Jensen built the foundation for the dynasty to come, with his teams finishing seventh, fourth, and third in the three years before the State Championship skein started. Following our sophomore year, Jensen moved to Spokane, where he coached at Spokane Falls Community College (and where his son could get needed medical treatment). Even from afar, Jensen kept in touch with and supported the team -- for example, he sent each member an encouraging note on the eve of the state championships. Max Jensen and Mike Hepper -- two of the best coaches in Bomber history.

Note: A team score is computed by adding together the places of the first five finishers (of seven runners) on the team. For example, a sweep of the first five places (1+2+3+4+5) equals 15 points. If a team sweeps the first seven places in a dual meet, it achieves a perfect score -- 15-50.
